Category: IP and Core Protocols

Description: IP gateway MIB providing SNMP objects for monitoring and managing IP gateway devices including routing and WAN interface status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IPGW-MIB?

IPGW-MIB is a vendor MIB, apparently from US Robotics/3Com's NAS (Network Access Server) product line, defining SNMP objects for configuring and monitoring an IP gateway device's routing and WAN-facing settings. It exposes gateway configuration data such as local and gateway IP addresses, subnet masks, Ethernet framing type, SNMP trap destinations, and community strings, alongside a command table for issuing management operations. Its monitoring value centers on software/configuration status of the gateway function: confirming the correct IP addressing, framing, and trap-destination settings are in place, and using ipgwCmdTable-driven commands to check or change device state. It appears to be a standalone proprietary MIB without an explicit dependency on other standard MIBs mentioned in its source. Deployment context is small-office or remote-access gateway/NAS devices providing IP routing between a LAN and a WAN or dial-up network. Engineers can download the IPGW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IPGW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • US Robotics/3Com NAS IP gateway

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ipgwCfgTable/ipgwCfgEntry, keyed by ipgwCfgIndex, to verify ipgwCfgLocalIpAdrs, ipgwCfgGatewayIpAdrs, and ipgwCfgGatewayNetMask are correctly provisioned for a given gateway instance. Checking ipgwCfgTrapDest and ipgwCfgDefCommStr confirms SNMP trap delivery and community-string configuration are set as expected, which matters when traps stop arriving from a remote gateway. ipgwCfgEthnetFraming and ipgwCfgEthIfaceName would be reviewed if the Ethernet-side interface is not passing traffic correctly, and ipgwCmdTable entries would be used to issue or verify management commands against the device.

What Can Be Monitored
