Description: IP firewall administration MIB providing SNMP objects for firewall rule management and access control list configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IPFWADM-MIB?

IPFWADM-MIB is a vendor-neutral, Linux-associated MIB for monitoring the legacy ipfwadm firewall/accounting tool, the predecessor to ipchains and iptables. It exposes an accounting table of firewall rules describing source and destination address/netmask, protocol, matching interface, and traffic direction. Its monitoring focus is software firewall/ACL rule status and traffic matching - similar in spirit to IPFILTER - letting an admin confirm which rules are active and how traffic is mapping to them, a security/software service health indicator rather than a hardware telemetry source. It has no major dependency on other MIBs beyond standard SNMP and IP addressing conventions. It is deployed on legacy Linux-based firewalls/routers still running the ipfwadm packet filtering tool. Engineers can download the IPFWADM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IPFWADM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, Linux-associated MIB
  • Linux-based firewall/router running ipfwadm

Monitoring Examples

ipFwAccTable/ipFwAccEntry keyed by ipFwAccIndex exposes ipFwAccSrcAddr/ipFwAccSrcNetMask and ipFwAccDstAddr/ipFwAccDstNetMask to identify which address ranges a rule covers, along with ipFwAccProto and ipFwAccViaName/ipFwAccViaAddr for the matching interface, and ipFwAccDir/ipFwAccBidir for traffic direction. An admin would monitor these fields to confirm a rule is correctly scoped and watch for unexpected traffic matching a rule believed to be unused.

What Can Be Monitored

  • firewall rule source/destination address and netmask
  • protocol matched by rule
  • rule direction (bidirectional or not)
  • matching interface (via name/address)
  • rule index
