Description: Manages directed broadcast and limited broadcast forwarding policy on HP/Comware routing devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-IP-BROADCAST-MIB?

HPN-ICF-IP-BROADCAST-MIB is a Hewlett-Packard (Comware/H3C-derived "ICF" MIB family) vendor-specific MIB that manages IP directed-broadcast forwarding behavior on HP networking devices, aligned with the guidance in RFC 2644. It exposes two scalar controls under hpnicfIpBdstScalarGroup: hpnicfIpBdstForwardBroadcast (whether the device forwards direct broadcast datagrams onto a local subnet) and hpnicfIpReceiveBroadcast (whether the device accepts direct broadcast datagrams addressed to it), along with a reserved trap subtree (hpnicfIpBdstTrap) for future broadcast-related notifications. This compact configuration/security-posture MIB is useful to confirm directed-broadcast forwarding is disabled where required (mitigating smurf-style amplification attacks) or intentionally enabled for legacy broadcast-dependent applications. It depends on HPN-ICF-OID-MIB for the parent hpnicfCommon subtree, and administrators can download the HPN-ICF-IP-BROADCAST-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-IP-BROADCAST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP Comware-based routers and Layer 3 switches

Monitoring Examples

A security audit polls hpnicfIpBdstForwardBroadcast across edge routers to confirm the value is notForwarding(2) per hardening policy; a router unexpectedly reporting forwarding(1) would flag a device still capable of relaying directed broadcast traffic, a known amplification-attack vector.

What Can Be Monitored

  • direct broadcast forward enable/disable state
  • direct broadcast receive enable/disable state
