Category: Domain: WAN, Vendor: Intel

Description: Intel HDLC interface MIB providing SNMP objects for High-level Data Link Control serial link configuration and statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INTEL-HDLC-MIB?

INTEL-HDLC-MIB is a proprietary Intel MIB from 1997 providing HDLC-layer error counters for serial WAN links, applicable to encapsulation layers such as PPP, individual or bundled ISDN B-channels, or the HDLC layer of a V.x WAN link. hdlcMonitorTable, indexed by hdlcMonitorIndex (the ifIndex of the associated layer), exposes receiver-side error counters (hdlcMonitorReceiverChecksumErrors for CRC errors, ReceiverGiants for oversized frames, ReceiverDwarves for undersized frames, ReceiverAborts, ReceiverOverruns, ReceiverMisalignments for non-octet-aligned frames) plus async-specific counters (ReceiverAsyncParityErrors, ReceiverAsyncFramingErrors, ReceiverAsyncBreaks) and a transmitter underrun counter. This gives an operator link-layer visibility into WAN circuit quality below IP, useful for isolating physical/datalink problems such as bad cabling, clocking mismatches, or buffer exhaustion on serial or ISDN links. It is a small, standalone counter table depending only on mib2ext from INTEL-GEN-MIB, and was deployed on Intel WAN/ISDN adapter cards and routers; administrators can perform an INTEL-HDLC-MIB download to load it into their MIB browser when troubleshooting these legacy serial interfaces.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INTEL-HDLC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Intel WAN/ISDN adapter cards and routers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls hdlcMonitorTable for a given hdlcMonitorIndex and watches hdlcMonitorReceiverChecksumErrors and hdlcMonitorReceiverOverruns increment; a steadily rising checksum-error count alongside frequent hdlcMonitorReceiverAborts would indicate a noisy or misconfigured serial/ISDN link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • HDLC receiver CRC/checksum error counter
  • oversized/undersized frame counters
  • receiver abort and overrun counters
  • frame misalignment counter
  • async parity/framing/break error counters
