Category: Standard: IEEE 802, Technology: OAM

Description: IEEE 802.1 MIB version 2 for Connectivity Fault Management (802.1ag) providing updated OAM domain and MEP management objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IEEE8021-CFM-V2-MIB?

IEEE8021-CFM-V2-MIB is a vendor-neutral IEEE 802.1 standards MIB, version 2 of the Connectivity Fault Management (802.1ag) module, used to configure and monitor Ethernet OAM (Operations, Administration, and Maintenance) on bridges and switches. It models Maintenance Domains, Maintenance Associations, and Maintenance End Points (MEPs) through objects like the ieee8021CfmStackTable, which ties a maintenance-level/direction/VLAN combination to a specific MEP on an interface. Its monitoring purpose is fault detection at the Ethernet service layer rather than physical hardware sensors: by tracking MEP identity, MAC address, and stack relationships per interface, an operator can detect connectivity faults (loss of continuity, misconfiguration, or unexpected MEPs) between endpoints of an Ethernet service spanning multiple switches. ieee8021CfmStackMdLevel and ieee8021CfmStackDirection reveal at which maintenance level and direction (up/down) fault monitoring is configured, critical for correctly diagnosing where in a multi-domain network a fault lies. As an IEEE 802.1Q-referenced module it explicitly builds on and supersedes objects from the original CFM MIB, and it is deployed on Ethernet switches/bridges across multiple vendors that implement 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management for carrier Ethernet and enterprise service assurance. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the IEEE8021-CFM-V2-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IEEE8021-CFM-V2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • Ethernet switch/bridge implementing IEEE 802.1ag CFM

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll ieee8021CfmStackTable/ieee8021CfmStackEntry, keyed by ieee8021CfmStackifIndex and ieee8021CfmStackMdIndex/ieee8021CfmStackMaIndex, to confirm which ieee8021CfmStackMepId and ieee8021CfmStackMacAddress are active on a given interface for a maintenance association. Checking ieee8021CfmStackMdLevel and ieee8021CfmStackDirection would reveal whether the MEP is monitoring at the correct maintenance level and in the up or down direction, and a missing expected MEP entry in this table would indicate a misconfigured or failed connectivity-fault-management session on that link. ieee8021CfmVlanTable would be checked to correlate CFM monitoring with the specific VLAN/service instance affected by a detected fault.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MEP identity and MAC address per interface
  • maintenance domain level and direction
  • maintenance association/domain index mapping
  • VLAN-to-CFM service association
