Category: Vendor: IBM
Description: IBM MIB for network accounting and traffic measurement providing session and data usage reporting objects.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is IBMACCOUNTING-MIB?
IBMACCOUNTING-MIB is an IBM enterprise MIB for network accounting and traffic measurement, originally tied to IBM's APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) technology, used for session-based data usage reporting. It exposes objects reporting the overall status of the accounting/collection subsystem (active, inactive, or media full) along with configured thresholds and timestamp fields marking when the accounting manager last checkpointed. Its monitoring relevance is mostly about the health of the accounting/logging subsystem itself, i.e., software/service status, rather than hardware: an administrator checks ibmappnIsAcGlobeStatus to see whether usage-data collection is running normally or has stalled because storage media are full, using the byte threshold and checkpoint time fields to gauge how close the collection buffer is to capacity. It is tied to IBM's APPN networking architecture and complements other ibmappn-prefixed IBM MIBs on the same device rather than IETF standards. It is deployed on IBM SNA/APPN-capable network nodes (e.g., IBM 6611 routers) needing usage accounting for chargeback or capacity planning, and administrators typically start with an IBMACCOUNTING-MIB download to compile the module into their management station.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBMACCOUNTING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- IBM 6611 router
- IBM SNA/APPN-capable network node
Monitoring Examples
The scalar ibmappnIsAcGlobeStatus reports one of three states (no collection, collection active, or all media full) and would be polled to detect when accounting media has filled up, since a status of 3 means new usage records may be lost until media is cleared. ibmappnIsAcGlobeByteThresh defines the byte-count trigger for that condition, while the ibmappnIsAcGlobeMgrUtc* timestamp fields (seconds through year, weekday, and DST flag) record exactly when the accounting manager last checkpointed, letting an administrator confirm the accounting subsystem is actively updating rather than stalled.
What Can Be Monitored
- accounting collection status
- media-full condition
- byte count threshold
- last checkpoint timestamp
