Description: IBM MIB for ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnectivity) channel management providing mainframe I/O channel statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IBMESCON-MIB?

IBMESCON-MIB is an IBM vendor-specific MIB that models management of an ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnectivity) channel from its secondary (device) end, covering optical-fiber port status, host logical path status, and per-station data-transfer statistics for mainframe I/O channel connections. It exposes fiber light-on/off transition states in esconPortTable (esconPortInFiberStatus, esconPortOutFiberStatus), logical-path establishment state in esconLinkTable (esconLinkStatus: not-established/established/error) indexed by host link address and partition number, and detailed per-station packet counters in esconStationTable (data packets sent/received with and without errors, retransmissions, positive acknowledgements, and command retries). This gives an operator a channel-level view of whether a mainframe ESCON connection is physically up, logically established to the host, and transferring data without excessive retransmission, which is essential for diagnosing I/O channel outages on legacy mainframe-attached devices. It uses RFC-1212 OBJECT-TYPE conventions and depends on RFC1213-MIB (ifIndex) for channel-port indexing. It is deployed on IBM ESCON-attached peripheral controllers and channel-extension devices connecting to mainframe hosts, and administrators can download the IBMESCON-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBMESCON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM ESCON-attached peripheral controllers / channel-extension devices

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls esconLinkTable for esconLinkStatus on a given host link address/partition number and cross-checks esconStationTable's esconStationDataPacketsRetransmitted and esconStationCommandsRetried; a link status of hlpError(3) or a sharp rise in retransmitted packets and retried commands would indicate a degraded ESCON channel connection to the mainframe host.

What Can Be Monitored

  • optical fiber in/out light status per port
  • host logical path establishment status
  • data packets sent/received (with and without errors)
  • packet retransmission counters
  • positive-acknowledgement and command-retry counters
