Description: IBM MIB for the IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller providing OS/390 TCP/IP host-to-LAN connectivity management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IBM3172-MIB?

IBM3172-MIB manages the IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller, a legacy device used to bridge OS/390 mainframe hosts to LAN networks running IBM's ICP (Interconnect Communication Program) software, providing host-to-LAN TCP/IP connectivity. It exposes an ibm3172SystemTable with standard system identity fields (description, contact, location, interface count) alongside per-interface trap-enable settings and channel-level traffic counters. Its monitoring value spans both software configuration and traffic/fault visibility: the ibm3172ifTrapTable lets an operator control and verify which interface events generate traps, while ibm3172ifChanCountersTable objects like ibm3172ifInChanOctets track channel-level data volume, revealing whether the host channel connection is passing traffic as expected or has gone silent. The core system table's descr/contact/location fields support basic asset and status identification of the controller itself. This MIB depends on standard MIB-II-style system conventions for its base system group and is deployed specifically on IBM 3172 controllers bridging OS/390 mainframes to Ethernet/Token Ring LANs in legacy IBM mainframe networking environments. Engineers can download the IBM3172-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBM3172-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll ibm3172SystemTable/ibm3172SystemTableEntry to read ibm3172Descr, ibm3172Contact, ibm3172Location, and ibm3172ifNumber for basic device identification and interface count. Checking ibm3172ifChanCountersTable/ibm3172ifChanCountersTableEntry for ibm3172ifInChanOctets over time would reveal whether the mainframe channel connection is actively passing data or has stalled, indicating a channel-path problem. ibm3172ifTrapTable/ibm3172ifTrapTableEntry with ibm3172ifTrapEnable would be checked to confirm the controller is configured to notify the NMS of interface state changes on the affected channel.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system identity (description/contact/location)
  • interface count
  • per-channel inbound octet counters
  • interface trap-enable configuration

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ibm3172ifInChanOctets OID:

Select an IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ibm3172ifInChanOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of inbound octets which were transmitted to the host by the 3172, including all headers. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
