Description: IBM MIB for SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) disk health monitoring on IBM server systems.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IBM-SYSTEM-SMART-MIB?

IBM-SYSTEM-SMART-MIB is an IBM server-management MIB that exposes SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) disk health data for drives installed in IBM server systems. It provides a disk table listing each installed drive's identity and a set of SMART-derived health flags and settings. This is explicitly a hardware health MIB focused on storage: a predicted-failure flag surfaces SMART's early-warning indicator for a drive, a defunct flag marks a drive that has failed or dropped out, and enabled/period settings confirm monitoring is active and reporting on schedule. It builds on the industry-standard ATA/SCSI SMART disk-monitoring technology, translated into SNMP form, rather than any other formal MIB. It is deployed on IBM server hardware (such as IBM System x or similar rack/tower servers) to give administrators early warning of impending disk failures before data loss occurs. Engineers can download the IBM-SYSTEM-SMART-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBM-SYSTEM-SMART-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM server system (System x or similar) with SMART-capable disks

Monitoring Examples

Polling ibmSystemSmartDiskTable/ibmSystemSmartDiskEntry (keyed by ibmSystemSmartDiskKeyIndex/ibmSystemSmartDiskDeviceId) for ibmSystemSmartDiskPredictsFailure set to true reveals a drive SMART has flagged as likely to fail soon; ibmSystemSmartDiskDefunct being set additionally confirms the drive has already dropped out of service, prompting immediate replacement.

What Can Be Monitored

  • disk predicted-failure flag
  • disk defunct/failed status
  • SMART monitoring enabled state
  • SMART event reporting period
  • disk out-of-sync status
