Description: Informant Systems MIB for Motherboard Monitor (MBM) hardware sensor readings including temperature, voltage, and fan speed via SNMP.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INFORMANT-MBM?

INFORMANT-MBM is a MIB from Informant Systems that exposes hardware sensor readings gathered by the Motherboard Monitor (MBM) utility, historically used on Windows PCs to read onboard hardware monitoring chips via SMBus. It provides a generic sensor table describing each detected hardware sensor's bus type, path, chip name/type, and version, along with its current readout value. This MIB is squarely a hardware health-monitoring MIB: it is used to track motherboard-level temperature, voltage, and fan-speed sensors, letting an administrator detect overheating, voltage irregularities, or fan failure on a monitored PC/server. It is a lightweight, self-contained MIB not dependent on other standard hardware MIBs like the Host Resources MIB, instead defining its own simple sensor table. Typical deployment is on Windows-based PCs or servers running the MBM agent with an SNMP extension agent to expose sensor data to network monitoring tools via the INFORMANT-MBM MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INFORMANT-MBM. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Windows-based PCs/servers with SMBus hardware monitor chips (MBM-monitored motherboards)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polling mbmSensorTable (mbmSensorEntry, indexed by mbmSensorIndex) would read mbmSensorName and mbmSensorType to identify each sensor (e.g. CPU temperature, +12V rail, chassis fan), then check mbmSensorReadout and mbmSensorCurrentI for the current value. A temperature-type sensor's mbmSensorReadout climbing steadily, or a fan-type sensor's readout dropping to zero, would indicate a cooling failure requiring immediate attention. The mbmSmbName and mbmSmbType objects identify which SMBus hardware-monitor chip is supplying the readings, useful for correlating sensor identity across different motherboard models.

What Can Be Monitored
