Category: Network Interfaces, Standard: IETF

Description: IETF MIB for InfiniBand network interfaces providing IP-over-InfiniBand (IPoIB) interface statistics and management objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IB-IF-MIB?

IB-IF-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB for managing InfiniBand network interfaces, specifically covering IP-over-InfiniBand (IPoIB) interface statistics and configuration, extending the general ifTable framework to InfiniBand-specific link characteristics. It exposes interface-level identification and statistics analogous to standard IF-MIB counters but tailored to InfiniBand fabrics, such as link state, partition/GID information, and IPoIB-specific traffic counters. Its monitoring role centers on interface/link health and throughput: it lets an operator confirm an InfiniBand HCA (Host Channel Adapter) interface is up, correctly joined to its IB partition, and passing expected traffic volumes, essential in high-performance computing and storage fabrics where InfiniBand link faults directly impact cluster performance. As an IETF module it explicitly builds on and extends the standard IF-MIB (RFC 2863) interface model to InfiniBand-specific semantics. It is deployed on servers, storage arrays, and switches connected to InfiniBand fabrics, typically in HPC clusters, SANs, and RDMA-based data-center interconnects. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the IB-IF-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IB-IF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • servers, storage systems, and switches with InfiniBand/IPoIB interfaces

Monitoring Examples

No concrete sample_objects were provided for this module, so specific table/column names cannot be confirmed; consistent with its module description, a realistic use would be polling the IPoIB interface table (paralleling ifTable/ifXTable conventions) for link operational status and traffic counters on each InfiniBand HCA port to detect a down or degraded link in a compute cluster. A mismatch between expected and actual partition/GID membership on an interface would similarly reveal a fabric configuration problem preventing that node from communicating over the InfiniBand network.

What Can Be Monitored

  • InfiniBand interface operational status
  • IPoIB interface traffic statistics
  • interface partition/GID membership
