Category: Standard: IETF

Description: IETF MIB for managing InfiniBand channel adapters providing fabric connectivity statistics and configuration for IPoIB interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IB-CA-MIB?

IB-CA-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB, extracted from the IPoIB working group's draft-ietf-ipoib-channel-adapter-mib, that models InfiniBand Channel Adapters (CAs) -- the host or target-side network adapters that connect a system to an InfiniBand fabric. It exposes general CA identity and port count in ibCaGeneralInfoTable (ibCaType distinguishing host CA from target CA, ibCaNodeGuid, ibCaNumPorts), detailed transport-service capability flags in ibCaAttributeTable (support for Reliable/Unreliable Connection and Datagram services, atomic operations, multicast, auto path migration, memory protection), and per-port attributes and GID tables in ibCaPortAttributeTable/ibCaPortGidTable (physical interface type, static rate control, multipathing support, GID assignments). This gives an operator a hardware-capability and fabric-identity inventory of each Channel Adapter, useful for confirming that CAs on both ends of a link support the transport services and GIDs required by an application before troubleshooting fabric connectivity issues. It depends on IB-TC-MIB for the IbPhysPort textual convention used for port indexing. It is deployed on any InfiniBand-attached host or target system with IPoIB management support, and the IB-CA-MIB RFC draft (never formally assigned an RFC number) remains the reference specification implementers cite.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IB-CA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (IETF IPoIB working group draft), not tied to a specific manufacturer -- applies to InfiniBand-attached host/target Channel Adapters

Monitoring Examples

An operator walks ibCaPortAttributeTable for a given ibCaIndex/ibCaPortIndex to check ibCaPhysicalInterface and ibCaSupportsMultipathing, then cross-references ibCaPortGidTable for the expected ibCaPortGidValue; a port missing an expected GID entry, or reporting fewer supported transport services than the peer CA in ibCaAttributeTable, would indicate a fabric configuration or firmware mismatch preventing a QP connection from establishing.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Channel Adapter type (host/target) and port count
  • node and port GUID/GID identity
  • supported transport service classes (RC/UC/RD/UD)
  • atomic operation, multicast, and auto-path-migration support flags
  • per-port physical interface type and static-rate-control support
