What Is HUAWEI-CPU-MIB?

HUAWEI-CPU-MIB is Huawei's proprietary MIB for monitoring processor utilization across a device's main and forwarding-plane processor modules. It exposes CPU load statistics—typically current, average, and peak utilization percentages per processor/board—along with configurable utilization thresholds used to trigger alarms. This is squarely a hardware/software health-monitoring MIB: it is the primary means of detecting CPU overload conditions (a main processor pegged at high utilization due to a routing convergence storm, or a forwarding processor saturated by traffic) that can precede performance degradation or device unresponsiveness, and threshold-crossing traps give proactive warning before a full outage. It is a device-specific analog to the more generic HOST-RESOURCES-MIB's hrProcessorLoad, but with Huawei's multi-processor/board-aware structure. It is deployed universally across Huawei routers and switches wherever an NMS needs granular per-board CPU health visibility, standard practice in carrier and enterprise network monitoring. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-CPU-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-CPU-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An NMS periodically polls each board's current CPU utilization object to build a load trend and compares it against a configured high-utilization threshold; a sustained reading near 100% on the main control processor would indicate the device is CPU-bound, potentially from excessive routing updates or a management-plane attack, while a similar spike on a forwarding processor would suggest a traffic-driven overload. Threshold-crossing traps configured on this MIB let the NMS alert on CPU exhaustion in near real time rather than only during periodic polling.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hwCpuDevDuty OID:

Select a Huawei router or switch (per-board CPU utilization) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hwCpuDevDuty into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The value of this object identifies the average CPU occupancy of a board or an entity. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if utilization exceeds 85%, a common warning threshold before sustained high load affects performance. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
