Description: Defines HP OpenView Storage Area Manager (OV SAM) information model objects for SAN fabric management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPOVSam-IM?

HPOVSam-IM is an HP vendor-private MIB defining the information model for HP OpenView Storage Area Manager (OV SAM), registered under hp.nm.hpStorageAssistant.hpSanManager. Rather than modeling SAN hardware directly, it defines a generic event/trap object set -- severityLevel, category, id, msgString, sourceName, and uniqueId in mibModuleEventVars -- that is reused as the variable bindings for a family of SAN-management traps split across functional subsystems: hpovsamGenericTrap, hpovsamDeviceTrap, hpovsamAccountantTrap, hpovsamAllocaterTrap, hpovsamBuilderTrap, and hpovsamOptimizerTrap, corresponding to OV SAM's device discovery, capacity accounting, storage allocation, fabric zoning/build, and performance optimization functions. Because it is primarily a notification/event MIB, it is most useful for feeding a NOC's trap receiver with categorized, severity-ranked SAN events rather than for polling numeric counters. It depends on the base OpenView network-management framework (nm subtree) for its registration and is deployed on HP OpenView management servers running SAM to monitor Fibre Channel SAN fabrics; storage administrators can download the HPOVSam-IM file to decode these SAN management events in their trap receiver.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPOVSam-IM. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP OpenView Storage Area Manager (SAN management server) and managed SAN fabric devices

Monitoring Examples

An operator's trap receiver watches hpovsamDeviceTrap and hpovsamAllocaterTrap events for severityLevel indicating a critical condition; a hpovsamDeviceTrap reporting a high severityLevel with a msgString referencing a failed HBA or switch port would indicate a SAN fabric device has gone offline and needs immediate attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • event severity level
  • event category classification
  • event/message text and unique ID
  • source device name reporting the event
  • contact info associated with an event
  • per-subsystem traps (device, accountant, allocater, builder, optimizer)
