Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: H3C/HH3C, Vendor: HP/HPE

Description: Provides additional HP/Comware RMON extension objects for per-VLAN and per-port traffic analysis.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-RMON-EXT2-MIB?

HPN-ICF-RMON-EXT2-MIB is an HP Networking (Comware ICF platform) enterprise MIB extending standard RMON with additional per-VLAN and per-port alarm capabilities beyond RFC 2819 RMON. It defines an extended alarm table allowing thresholds to be set on arbitrary MIB variables sampled at an interval, with configurable rising and falling thresholds and associated event indices. Its monitoring value is in proactive traffic and performance anomaly detection: administrators define alarms on counters (such as interface traffic or error rates) and get notified when values cross rising or falling thresholds, which is useful for catching congestion, error bursts, or unusual traffic patterns. It extends the standard RMON MIB (RFC 2819) framework with HP/H3C-specific enhancements. It is deployed on HP Networking (Comware-based, ICF) switches, where HPN-ICF-RMON-EXT2-MIB SNMP monitoring provides enhanced network traffic and threshold-alarm visibility.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-RMON-EXT2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP Networking (Comware/ICF) switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator can configure hpnicfRmonExtAlarmTable/hpnicfRmonExtAlarmEntry with hpnicfRmonExtAlarmVariable pointing at an interface error counter, setting hpnicfRmonExtAlarmRisingThreshold and hpnicfRmonExtAlarmFallingThreshold to detect abnormal spikes. When hpnicfRmonExtAlarmValue crosses the rising threshold, the associated hpnicfRmonExtAlarmRisingEvtIndex triggers an event, alerting staff to a sudden increase in errors or traffic on that port or VLAN. hpnicfRmonExtAlarmSampleType determines whether the comparison uses absolute or delta values, affecting how transient spikes are detected.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RMON extended alarm threshold status
  • sampled variable current value
  • rising/falling threshold crossings
  • alarm sample interval and type
