Description: Manages Multitenant Device Context (MDC) virtualization partitions on HP/Comware high-end switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-MDC-MIB?

HPN-ICF-MDC-MIB is an HP/H3C Comware private MIB for managing Multitenant Device Contexts (MDCs), a virtualization feature that partitions a single high-end chassis into multiple logically independent virtual devices. It exposes objects for creating, naming, and controlling MDC instances, tracking the maximum and current number of MDCs supported, and assigning CPU, storage/disk, and memory resources to each partition. This MIB is squarely about software/hardware resource status: it lets an administrator monitor how many MDCs exist versus the device's maximum, each MDC's operational status, and its allocated disk resource usage, effectively tracking virtualized device-health resource consumption. Because MDCs also authorize physical interface cards to specific partitions, this MIB has an implicit dependency on chassis/entity and interface-related MIBs for identifying the underlying hardware being assigned. It is deployed on large HP/H3C Comware core switches/routers used for multi-tenant or multi-department network virtualization, and administrators can download the HPN-ICF-MDC-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-MDC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP/H3C Comware high-end/core chassis switches and routers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls hpnicfMDCCurrentMDCNum against hpnicfMDCMaxMDCNum to see how much virtualization headroom remains on the chassis, then walks hpnicfMDCControlTable (indexed by hpnicfMDCIndex) to check each hpnicfMDCName and hpnicfMDCStatus. If hpnicfMDCStatus shows a partition stuck in a transitional state after an hpnicfMDCAction request, that signals a failed MDC creation or resource assignment. Checking hpnicfMDCDISKResourceTable per hpnicfMDCDISKResourceInstance reveals whether a specific MDC is approaching its allotted disk quota.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current vs. maximum MDC count
  • per-MDC operational status
  • MDC creation/deletion actions
  • disk resource allocation per MDC
  • MDC row status/configuration state
