Category: Technology: Loop Detection, Technology: Switching/L2, Vendor: H3C/HH3C, Vendor: HP/HPE
Description: Manages loopback detection (LPBKDT) on Layer 2 ports to detect and respond to network loops on HP/Comware switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is HPN-ICF-LPBKDT-MIB?
HPN-ICF-LPBKDT-MIB is an HP/H3C Comware (ICF) MIB that manages Loopback Detection (LPBKDT) on Layer 2 switch ports, a feature designed to detect and mitigate network loops that can cause broadcast storms. It exposes configuration data such as the VLAN ID(s) on which loopback detection operates, along with objects/notifications for the feature. Its monitoring value is fault-oriented: the associated notifications alert operators in real time when a loop is detected on a port or VLAN, which is critical for preventing broadcast-storm-induced outages -- this is a network-fault health indicator analogous to monitoring for a critical software/service condition. It depends on general Comware Layer 2/VLAN infrastructure and the SNMP notification framework for trap delivery. It is typically deployed on HP/H3C Comware switches in networks prone to accidental cabling loops, such as campus or access-layer deployments. Engineers can download the HPN-ICF-LPBKDT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-LPBKDT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- HP/H3C Comware switches and routers
Monitoring Examples
An administrator's NMS would subscribe to hpnicfLpbkdtNotifications to receive an alert whenever loopback detection triggers on a VLAN identified by hpnicfLpbkdtVlanID, indicating a physical or configuration loop has been detected on a port within that VLAN. hpnicfLpbkdtObjects would hold the related configuration/status objects consulted to confirm which VLAN and port triggered the condition, letting the operator quickly isolate and remove the offending cable or misconfigured trunk.
What Can Be Monitored
- loopback detection status per VLAN
- loop-detected trap/notification
- VLAN ID triggering loopback detection
