Description: Huawei VBST (VLAN-based Spanning Tree) MIB for managing per-VLAN spanning tree instances on Huawei access switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HUAWEI-VBST-MIB?

HUAWEI-VBST-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Huawei that manages VBST (VLAN-based Spanning Tree), a per-VLAN spanning-tree feature deployed on Huawei access switches to prevent Layer 2 loops on a per-VLAN basis rather than per Eth-Trunk/port alone. It exposes capacity/utilization scalars — hwVbstMaxTrunkNum, hwVbstMaxPVNum, hwVbstMaxVlanNum, hwVbstVlanNum (VLANs whose VBST state cannot be calculated), and hwVbstMaxTrunkPVNum — alongside hwVbstTrapPort and hwVbstTrapVlan identifying where uncalculated-VLAN packets were received. A rich notification set (hwVbstTrunkNumExceeded/Resumed, hwVbstPVNumExceeded/Resumed, hwVbstVlanNumExceeded/Resumed, hwVbstInvalidPV, hwVbstTrunkPVNumExceeded/Resumed, hwVbstRspanCfgConflict) reports when configured VBST scale limits are approached, exceeded, or resolved, and when an Eth-Trunk RSPAN observing-port configuration conflicts with a remote peer. This makes it primarily a scale-limit and configuration-conflict monitoring MIB for the spanning-tree control plane rather than a topology/root-bridge MIB. The HUAWEI-VBST-MIB MIB is deployed on Huawei access switches running VBST to protect against loops in multi-VLAN Layer 2 topologies.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-VBST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei access switches (S-series switches supporting VBST)

Monitoring Examples

An operator subscribes to hwVbstVlanNumExceeded and polls the hwVbstMaxVlanNum/hwVbstVlanNum ratio; a hwVbstVlanNumExceeded trap combined with hwVbstTrapPort/hwVbstTrapVlan identifying a specific access port would indicate that port is receiving VBST BPDUs for more VLANs than the switch can track, risking loop-protection gaps on the untracked VLANs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • max/current trunk, port-VLAN, and VLAN counts for VBST
  • uncalculated-VLAN trap port/VLAN identification
  • scale-limit exceeded/resumed notifications
  • RSPAN configuration conflict notification
