Description: Manages IP accounting (IPA) statistics for traffic measurement per source/destination on HP/Comware routers.

What Is HPN-ICF-IPA-MIB?

HPN-ICF-IPA-MIB is a vendor-specific HP (Comware) MIB that provides IP Accounting (IPA) functionality, tracking packet and byte counts for IP traffic crossing a router's interfaces. It's built around a global enable object and per-interface hpnicfIpaIfConfigTable (in/out/firewall accounting flags), a user-defined hpnicfIpaAccountListTable of IP address/mask ranges used to classify traffic, and three result tables — hpnicfIpaIntListTable for packets matching the account list, hpnicfIpaExtListTable for packets that don't match, and hpnicfIpaFWListTable for packets denied by the firewall — each exposing inbound/outbound packet and byte counters keyed by source/destination IP and protocol. It also provides list-aging and max-item-count controls plus a cleaning-flag object to clear accounting tables on demand. Monitoring it lets operators see per-flow traffic volumes and firewall-denied traffic without deploying separate flow-export tooling, useful for traffic profiling and capacity planning on Comware-based routers, and administrators can download the HPN-ICF-IPA-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-IPA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP Comware-based routers and switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls hpnicfIpaFWListTable (indexed by hpnicfIpaFWListIpSrc/IpDst) to check hpnicfIpaFWListInPackets/InBytes for traffic denied by the firewall; a fast-rising counter for a specific source/destination pair would indicate a persistent, blocked traffic flow worth investigating, such as a misconfigured host or an ongoing scan.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global/per-interface IP accounting enable state
  • account list IP address/mask classification entries
  • internal traffic list packet/byte counters (matched flows)
  • external traffic list packet/byte counters (unmatched flows)
  • firewall-denied traffic packet/byte counters
  • list aging timeout and max-item limits

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfIpaIntListInPackets OID:

Select an HP Comware router/switch (IP accounting) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfIpaIntListInPackets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of inbound packets in hpnicfIpaIntListTable. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
