Description: HP SNMP MIB for IP tunnel interface configuration and statistics including GRE and IPsec tunnels on HP networking devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-TUNNEL-MIB?

HP-TUNNEL-MIB is a Hewlett-Packard SNMP module for managing IP tunnel interfaces — including GRE and IPsec-style tunnels — on HP networking devices, along with VLAN-to-tunnel mapping. It exposes tunnel source/destination address configuration, per-tunnel MTU-drop diagnostic data, and VLAN tunnel mapping table entries. Its monitoring focus is tunnel software/interface health — specifically, catching packets being silently dropped because they exceed a tunnel's negotiated MTU, which explains intermittent application failures over a tunnel that otherwise looks up. It is a standalone HP module addressing tunnel management, conceptually related to but not a formal extension of the IETF's generic Tunnel MIB (RFC 4087). It is deployed on HP routers/switches terminating GRE or IPsec tunnels across a WAN or between sites needing VLAN extension over a tunnel. Engineers can download the HP-TUNNEL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-TUNNEL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP router/switch terminating GRE or IPsec tunnels

Monitoring Examples

An administrator can poll the hpTunnelMTUDrop objects — hpTunnelMTUDropTunnelSource/hpTunnelMTUDropTunnelDest, hpTunnelMTUDropRouterAddr, and hpTunnelMTUDropTunnelMTU — to identify a specific tunnel where oversized packets are being dropped due to an MTU mismatch, and could enable hpTunnelMTUDropNotifyEnable to get a trap the next time it happens. The hpicfVlanTunnelMappingTable/hpicfVlanTunnelMappingEntry, keyed by hpicfVLANIndex, would be checked to confirm a given VLAN is correctly mapped to its intended tunnel.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tunnel MTU-drop events
  • tunnel source/destination address
  • VLAN-to-tunnel mapping
  • MTU-drop notification state
