Description: HP ICF SNMP MIB for instrumentation monitoring providing real-time performance counters and diagnostics on HP ProCurve switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-ICF-INST-MON?

HP-ICF-INST-MON is an HP proprietary "Instrumentation Monitor" MIB, a companion to HP-ICF-INST-MIB, adding threshold-based logging and trap notification on top of the same internal instrumentation parameters on HP ProCurve/Aruba switches. It exposes controls to enable logging (hpicfInstMonLogEnable) and trap notifications (hpicfInstMonTrapEnable), a per-interface parameter table carrying a configurable threshold (hpicfInstMonParameterThreshold), and notification text sent when a threshold is crossed. This is a direct software/performance-fault monitoring MIB that lets administrators be proactively alerted, via log entry or SNMP trap, when an internal performance counter exceeds its configured threshold, rather than requiring continuous manual polling. It depends on and extends the parameter definitions and interface indexing from HP-ICF-INST-MIB. It is deployed on HP ProCurve/Aruba switches where administrators want automatic alerting on abnormal internal performance parameters, such as per-interface counters trending out of range, and administrators can download the HP-ICF-INST-MON MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for threshold monitoring.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-ICF-INST-MON. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve switch
  • HP Aruba (ICF-based) switch

Monitoring Examples

hpicfInstMonParameterTable rows, keyed by hpicfInstMonInterfaceIndex and hpicfInstMonParameterIndex, pair a named parameter (hpicfInstMonParameterName) with an admin-set hpicfInstMonParameterThreshold; when the underlying instrumentation value crosses that threshold the device emits hpicfInstMonNotificationText as the body of a trap (if hpicfInstMonTrapEnable is set) or a log entry (if hpicfInstMonLogEnable is set). An administrator would set a threshold on a per-interface error or utilization parameter and rely on the resulting trap to catch a developing problem without needing to poll continuously.

What Can Be Monitored

  • instrumentation log/trap enable state
  • per-interface parameter threshold
  • threshold-crossing notifications
  • monitored parameter name and value
