Description: Hirschmann HiOS (HM2) DNS MIB for Domain Name System client configuration and resolver settings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HM2-DNS-MIB?

HM2-DNS-MIB is a Hirschmann HiOS proprietary MIB that manages the DNS client, DNS cache, and DNS caching-server functionality on Hirschmann industrial switches. It exposes configuration objects (client admin state, configuration source, list of configured DNS servers) as well as diagnostic tables that track per-server resolution status. Its monitoring value centers on software/service status rather than physical hardware: administrators use it to confirm whether DNS resolution is enabled (hm2DnsClientAdminState) and whether configured name servers are actually responding, which is essential for diagnosing failed hostname lookups used by other management protocols (e.g. NTP, syslog, RADIUS). It is a vendor-private extension that stands alongside standard IETF DNS-related MIB concepts but is not a direct dependency of any particular RFC. It is deployed on Hirschmann HiOS-based switches in industrial or utility networks where devices resolve hostnames for logging, authentication, or time-sync destinations. Engineers can download the HM2-DNS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HM2-DNS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Hirschmann HiOS industrial Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin would check hm2DnsClientAdminState to confirm DNS client functionality is turned on, then inspect hm2DnsClientServerCfgTable (rows keyed by hm2DnsClientServerIndex, holding hm2DnsClientServerAddressType and hm2DnsClientServerAddress) to verify which resolvers are configured. The companion hm2DnsClientServerDiagTable exposes per-server diagnostic entries (hm2DnsClientServerDiagIndex) that reveal whether a given configured DNS server is actually reachable and answering queries. A DNS server showing consistent diagnostic failures would explain downstream failures in hostname-based configuration (e.g. NTP or syslog servers specified by name).

What Can Be Monitored

  • DNS client admin state
  • configuration source
  • configured DNS server addresses
  • per-server DNS diagnostic status
