Description: Covers OLT and ONU port management for IEEE 802.3ah EFM EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) on H3C access platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HH3C-DOT3-EFM-EPON-MIB?

HH3C-DOT3-EFM-EPON-MIB is an H3C enterprise MIB implementing the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) Multi-Point Control Protocol (MPCP) interfaces, the foundation of EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) access technology used to deliver fiber-to-the-home/business services. Although drawn from the IEEE draft standard with H3C-prefixed object names, it is expected to expose per-ONU/OLT MPCP interface configuration and status objects such as registration state, discovery windows, and interface counters. Its intended monitoring role is hardware/link-status oriented: tracking whether ONUs are registered and active on the PON, and surfacing MPCP-layer errors, which are key indicators of optical access-network health. It explicitly derives from and maps to the IEEE 802.3ah standard (clauses 64/65), noted in the module description as its normative reference. Typical deployment is on H3C EPON OLT (optical line terminal) equipment in fiber access networks serving multiple ONUs. Engineers can download the HH3C-DOT3-EFM-EPON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HH3C-DOT3-EFM-EPON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C EPON OLT (optical line terminal)
  • EPON ONU (optical network unit)

Monitoring Examples

No specific object names were provided for this MIB, so exact identifiers can't be cited here, but based on its IEEE 802.3ah EFM/MPCP scope, an operator would typically monitor per-ONU MPCP registration/discovery status and related interface error counters to detect an ONU that has dropped off the PON or is failing to register.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MPCP interface registration state
  • ONU discovery status
  • MPCP interface error counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hh3cDot3MpcpMACCtrlFramesTransmitted OID:

Select an H3C EPON OLT/ONU (802.3ah EFM MPCP interface) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hh3cDot3MpcpMACCtrlFramesTransmitted into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of MPCP frames passed to the MAC sublayer for transmission. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in frames), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
