Last Updated: 2009-04-07

Category: Protocol: SNMP, Vendor: H3C/HH3C

Description: Extends SNMP framework management on H3C devices with vendor-specific community, view, and access control configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is H3C-SNMP-EXT-MIB?

H3C-SNMP-EXT-MIB is an H3C proprietary extension to the standard SNMP framework MIBs, adding H3C-specific configuration objects for community strings, MIB views, and access control beyond what SNMPv2-MIB and VACM-related standard MIBs provide. Its object tree is organized into scalar objects, tables, and notifications covering the device's extended SNMP agent configuration rather than exposing hardware sensors or traffic counters. Its main monitoring/administrative value is confirming and auditing the SNMP management-plane configuration itself — which communities, views, and access rules are active — which is important for security posture and for verifying that a device remains reachable for monitoring after a configuration change. It directly extends and depends on standard SNMP framework MIBs (SNMPv2-MIB, SNMP-VACM-MIB) for base community/view/access semantics. It is deployed across the H3C product line wherever administrators need finer-grained SNMP access control than the standard MIBs alone provide. Engineers can download the H3C-SNMP-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in H3C-SNMP-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C switches and routers with SNMP management

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would inspect h3cSnmpExtScalarObjects for global SNMP extension settings and walk h3cSnmpExtTables to enumerate H3C-specific community, view, or access-control entries, verifying that only expected read/write communities and source restrictions are configured. h3cSnmpExtNotifications would alert on changes to this SNMP access configuration, such as a new community string being added, which is useful for detecting unauthorized changes to a device's management-plane security. Since sample object names beyond the top-level groups were not provided, exact table/column names should be confirmed against the MIB source when building specific polling rules.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP view and access-control settings
