Description: H3C MIB for protocol-based VLAN assignment routing packets to VLANs based on their Layer 2 protocol type.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is H3C-PROTOCOL-VLAN-MIB?

H3C-PROTOCOL-VLAN-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from H3C that manages protocol-based VLAN assignment, a Layer 2 feature that classifies and routes packets into VLANs according to their Layer 2 protocol type (e.g., IP, IPX, AppleTalk) rather than by port or tag alone. It exposes configuration objects that define protocol-to-VLAN mapping rules on switch ports, allowing administrators to segregate traffic types into separate broadcast domains automatically. This MIB is primarily a configuration-state monitoring tool: it lets an operator confirm which protocol templates are bound to which VLANs and ports, verifying that traffic segmentation policy is applied as designed rather than exposing hardware health metrics. It is a private H3C MIB with no direct dependency on IETF standards, complementing the standard Q-BRIDGE-MIB VLAN model with protocol-based classification not covered there. It is typically deployed on H3C/HPE Comware access and distribution switches in networks running legacy or mixed-protocol environments needing automatic VLAN segregation. Engineers can download the H3C-PROTOCOL-VLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in H3C-PROTOCOL-VLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • H3C/HPE Comware switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would query the protocol-VLAN binding entries (structured similarly to a protocolVlanTable/protocolVlanEntry keyed by port and protocol template index) to confirm that a given protocol type is still correctly mapped to its intended VLAN ID on a port. If a binding is missing or altered, traffic of that protocol type would fall back to the port's default VLAN, unexpectedly mixing traffic domains. Periodic polling of these configuration objects lets network staff detect unauthorized or accidental changes to protocol-VLAN policy. This is chiefly a configuration-integrity check rather than a performance metric.

What Can Be Monitored

  • protocol-to-VLAN mapping rules
  • protocol template configuration
  • port VLAN binding by protocol type
  • VLAN assignment policy status
