Description: H3C MIB for Port Extender (PEX) management in IRF systems extending switching capacity via remote port modules.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is H3C-PEX-MIB?
H3C-PEX-MIB is an H3C (Huawei-3Com) proprietary MIB module for managing Port Extender (PEX) technology, used to virtually extend the port capacity of a parent switch through remote port-extending units, typically within an IRF (Intelligent Resilient Framework) fabric. It exposes configuration and status data describing the range of extender port and associate IDs, the mapping of extended ports to physical entities, and per-port descriptive and operational status information. From a monitoring perspective it is primarily useful for tracking the operational status of each extended port (up/down/other) and confirming that extender port associations remain correctly bound to their physical interface indexes, which is critical for detecting a disconnected or misconfigured port-extender module. It complements ENTITY-MIB (via entPhysicalIndex references) and standard IF-MIB interface concepts, since PEX ports map onto the physical entity tree. It is deployed in H3C data-center and campus switches that use port extenders to scale access-layer port density without adding full switch chassis, a capability the H3C-PEX-MIB MIB exposes for SNMP-based monitoring.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in H3C-PEX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- H3C switches with Port Extender (PEX) support
- H3C IRF fabric access switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll the h3cPexPortTable (h3cPexPortEntry) to enumerate configured extender ports by h3cPexPortId and h3cPexPortAssociateId, cross-referencing h3cPexPortEntPhysicalIndex against the entity MIB to identify the physical extender unit, and checking h3cPexPortStatus to see if a specific extended port has dropped from active to inactive. Scalars like h3cPexPortMinId/h3cPexPortMaxId and h3cPexMinAssociateId/h3cPexMaxAssociateId help validate that a newly added extender's port IDs fall within the platform's supported range, while h3cPexMaxPortPerPexPort bounds capacity planning. h3cPexTraps would notify on extender port state changes such as an unexpected h3cPexPortStatus transition, letting an operator quickly localize a fault to a specific extender box rather than the parent switch.
What Can Be Monitored
- extender port operational status
- port-to-associate ID mapping
- extender port to physical entity mapping
- port ID range configuration
- extender trap events
