Category: Network Management

Description: Monitors Gopher protocol server status and access statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is GopherServer-MIB?

The GopherServer-MIB is a vendor-neutral, legacy Internet-services MIB module written for monitoring Gopher protocol servers, an early pre-Web hierarchical document-retrieval system used in the late 1980s and 1990s. It exposes management data covering server operational status and client access statistics, in the style of other application-server MIBs from that era. Its main practical use is monitoring software status: whether the Gopher daemon process is running, how long it has been up, and how many requests it has served, which together indicate whether the service is healthy. It has no apparent formal dependency on other MIBs beyond standard SNMP SMI conventions, though in practice it would typically be paired with the host-resources MIB for process-level monitoring on the server. Deployment context is historic: research/university Gopher servers of the early Internet, now largely obsolete but occasionally documented for legacy network-management archives. Engineers can download the GopherServer-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GopherServer-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Gopher protocol server (vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer)

Monitoring Examples

This excerpt provides an empty sample-objects list and no MODULE-IDENTITY description text, so no concrete object or table names can be honestly cited here. Based on the short description alone, a typical deployment would poll a server-status scalar to confirm the daemon is up and access-statistics counters (e.g., request/connection counts) to gauge load, but none of these names are confirmed in this source. An admin would treat a stalled statistics counter or a status value flipping to 'down' as the key anomaly signal.

What Can Be Monitored

  • server operational status
  • client access/request statistics
  • server uptime
