What Is Fore-frs-MIB?

Fore-frs-MIB is a Fore Systems vendor MIB that supplements the standard Frame Relay MIBs (RFC 1604 and RFC 1315) with additional configuration and statistics for Frame Relay service running over ATM on ForeRunner switches. It exposes DLCI-level and connection-level configuration along with OAM F5 cell counters that track ATM virtual circuit health underneath the Frame Relay service. Its main monitoring value is fault detection at the hardware/link level: the frsOamF5 counters for AIS (Alarm Indication Signal) and RDI (Remote Defect Indication), both received and transmitted, directly indicate whether the underlying ATM VPI/VCI path has failed or is signaling a remote fault, which would otherwise surface only as a Frame Relay circuit outage. As its description notes, it is explicitly required in addition to the standard RFC 1604/RFC 1315 Frame Relay MIBs, not a replacement for them. It is deployed on carrier and enterprise Frame Relay-over-ATM circuits where Fore switches serve as the FR/ATM interworking device, and Fore-frs-MIB SNMP monitoring of the OAM F5 counters there catches underlying ATM path failures before they surface as a Frame Relay outage.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-frs-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

A network operations team monitoring a Frame Relay over ATM circuit would poll the frsOamF5Table, keyed by frsOamF5AtmIf/frsOamF5AtmVpi/frsOamF5AtmVci, watching frsOamF5AISRxCounter and frsOamF5RDIRxCounter for increments. A rising AIS receive count indicates the far-end ATM path has failed and is sending alarm cells downstream, while a rising RDI count indicates the remote end is reporting a defect back, both of which would explain a DLCI going down even though the local Frame Relay configuration appears unchanged.
