What Is ELAN-MIB?

ELAN-MIB is a vendor-neutral, ATM Forum/IETF standards-based MIB module defining management objects for Emulated LAN (ELAN) services running over ATM networks, part of the classic LAN Emulation (LANE) technology area. It exposes configuration data for ELAN definitions, such as LAN type and maximum frame size, along with tables tracking LAN Emulation Server (LES) instances and their association state. Administrators use it to monitor the software status of ATM LANE components, confirming that configured ELAN instances and their LES entries are present, correctly indexed, and in an active row status, effectively giving a health/availability view of the emulation service rather than raw traffic counters. It is built on ATM Forum LAN Emulation specifications, sitting under the atmForum/atmfLanEmulation enterprise tree alongside other ATM Forum MIBs. It is typically deployed in legacy ATM campus or carrier networks where Ethernet segments were emulated over an ATM backbone. Engineers can download the ELAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ELAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polling elanConfTable/elanConfEntry rows can see each configured ELAN's elanConfName, elanConfLanType, and elanConfMaxFrameSize, and check elanConfRowStatus to confirm the configuration is active. Cross-referencing with elanLesTable/elanLesEntry indexed by elanLesIndex reveals whether the LAN Emulation Server for that ELAN is present and reachable; a missing or stale LES entry alongside a valid elanConfEntry would indicate the emulation service has failed to associate a server. This lets an operator detect ELAN misconfiguration or LES failures without inspecting raw ATM signaling.

There are four memebers to an ELAN and they are LECS, LES, BUS (Broadcast and Unknown Server ) and LEC. The support of LECS is optional. The addition and deletion of LECS is done in the elanLecsConfGroup defined in this MIB. The addition and deletion of the LEC are done in the LEC Assignment tables defined in this ELAN Configuration group. The addition and deletion of the LES are also defined in this group. The addition and deletion of the BUS are done in the LES MIB due to the fact that LEC learns the BUS address only from the LES it corresponds to.
