Description: FreeRADIUS notification MIB defining SNMP traps and notifications for FreeRADIUS server events such as startup, shutdown, and authentication failures.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is FREERADIUS-NOTIFICATION-MIB?
FREERADIUS-NOTIFICATION-MIB is a vendor-neutral (open-source project) MIB defining SNMP traps and notifications for the FreeRADIUS authentication, authorization, and accounting server. It defines notification objects tied to server-level events, signal handling, worker thread activity, module status, and home-server (upstream RADIUS server) conditions such as startup, shutdown, and authentication failures. Its role is explicitly software/service-status monitoring: it lets an operator be alerted in near real time when the RADIUS daemon starts or stops, when a configured module fails, or when a home server becomes unreachable, which is critical for spotting authentication outages. It is closely tied to the companion FREERADIUS-PRODUCT-RADIUSD-MIB (which handles product/subagent identity) and to standard SNMPv2 notification conventions. It is deployed on Linux/Unix servers running the FreeRADIUS daemon in enterprise or ISP network-access-authentication environments. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the FREERADIUS-NOTIFICATION-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FREERADIUS-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral (open-source), Linux/Unix server running FreeRADIUS
Monitoring Examples
An NMS would subscribe to traps rooted at serverGlobal and serverSignal to be alerted the moment the radiusd process receives a shutdown/restart signal, and would watch serverThread and serverModules/serverModuleGeneric notifications to catch a worker thread hang or a module (e.g., an LDAP or SQL auth module) failing to initialize. homeServer-related traps would fire when an upstream RADIUS proxy target becomes unreachable, letting an admin catch an authentication back-end outage before users start failing to log in.
What Can Be Monitored
- server startup/shutdown events
- signal handling events
- worker thread status
- module load/failure status
- home server (upstream RADIUS) reachability

RFC description
SNMP MIB for FreeRADIUS authentication server that defines SNMP trap notifications for server events (start, stop, max requests), enabling remote monitoring and alerting of RADIUS server status through SNMP infrastructure.
Start monitoring FreeRADIUS authentication server (software, event/fault traps) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
