Description: Brocade Foundry CAM (Content Addressable Memory) MIB providing MAC address table, route table, and hardware forwarding entry management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FOUNDRY-SN-CAM-MIB?

FOUNDRY-SN-CAM-MIB is a Brocade (formerly Foundry Networks) vendor MIB describing the Content Addressable Memory (CAM) subsystem used for MAC address, route, and hardware forwarding table lookups on Foundry/Brocade switching and routing platforms. It exposes per-slot, per-processor CAM usage statistics, including table size, free entries, and utilization percentage for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding tables. This is squarely hardware-status monitoring: snCamUsageL3Slot and snCamUsageL3Processor identify which hardware component's CAM is being reported, while snCamUsageL3Size, snCamUsageL3Free, and snCamUsageL3UsedPercent reveal how close that hardware table is to exhaustion, a critical early-warning sign since a full CAM table causes packet flooding or dropped routes. It is a vendor-specific extension built on the standard Foundry/Brocade enterprise MIB tree rather than an IETF standard. It is deployed on Brocade/Foundry FastIron and BigIron switches and routers where administrators need to track hardware forwarding-table capacity as the network scales. Engineers can download the FOUNDRY-SN-CAM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FOUNDRY-SN-CAM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade/Foundry FastIron and BigIron switches and routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polling snCamUsageL3Table entries would check snCamUsageL3UsedPercent per snCamUsageL3Slot/snCamUsageL3Processor to catch a Layer 3 CAM table approaching capacity before route installation failures occur. A parallel walk of snCamUsageL2Table reveals the same risk for the MAC address table, where a nearly-full L2 CAM can cause unknown-unicast flooding. Tracking snCamUsageL3Free over time on a given slot helps correlate CAM exhaustion with a recent large BGP or OSPF route injection.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Layer 3 CAM table usage/free entries
  • Layer 2 CAM (MAC table) usage
  • CAM utilization percentage per slot/processor
  • forwarding table capacity

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using snCamUsageL3Free OID:

Select a Brocade/Foundry FastIron/BigIron switch/router (CAM forwarding-table usage) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type snCamUsageL3Free into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The amount of CAM currently available for this layer 3 traffic entry. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline (in Entries), since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
