Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), SNMP Framework

Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for RMON remote monitoring on Cisco routing and switching platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-RMON-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-RMON-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that formally describes which parts of the standard RMON-MIB (Remote Monitoring MIB) are implemented by SNMP agents on Cisco routing and switching platforms. Rather than exposing its own data objects, it documents implementation-specific variations, limitations, and supported groups (such as RMON statistics, history, alarms, and events) of the underlying RMON-MIB on a given Cisco IOS/IOS-XE image. As a capabilities file it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status itself; instead it tells a management application what RMON-based traffic and error statistics that platform can actually report. It is entirely dependent on RMON-MIB (RFC 2819) since it only exists to declare that MIB's supported feature set on Cisco devices. It is used during network management system integration and MIB compliance testing to determine which RMON monitoring features (e.g., Ethernet statistics collection, history sampling, threshold alarms) are safe to configure on a particular Cisco platform/software version. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-RMON-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-RMON-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router
  • Cisco switch (IOS/IOS-XE platforms)

Monitoring Examples

This module is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES declaration with no runtime data objects of its own (no sample objects were provided), so there is no monitoring scenario to describe; it is only consulted by NMS tooling to determine which groups of RMON-MIB (such as etherStatsTable or alarmTable) a specific Cisco software release actually supports.
