What Is FLARION-FOAM-MIB?

FLARION-FOAM-MIB is Flarion Technologies' vendor-specific Flash-OFDM Access Management (FOAM) MIB for managing Flarion's Flash-OFDM wireless broadband base station infrastructure, an early mobile broadband technology later acquired by Qualcomm. It exposes hardware inventory objects for field-replaceable units - serial number, production date, part number, hardware version, assembly/slot ID - along with base station and controller identifiers (foamBtsIdentifier, foamBscNameIdentifier) and operational/administrative state objects. Its core use is hardware and operational status monitoring of base station hardware: foamOpState and foamAdminState track whether a card/module (including LED and MCU sub-components under foamLed/foamMcu) is in service, while identification objects support tracking hardware version and asset details for field maintenance. As a proprietary Flarion enterprise MIB it does not depend on external standard MIBs beyond the base SNMP SMI/conformance framework. It was deployed in Flarion (later Qualcomm) Flash-OFDM base transceiver station (BTS) and base station controller (BSC) wireless network installations. Engineers can download the FLARION-FOAM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FLARION-FOAM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Flarion Flash-OFDM base transceiver stations (BTS)
  • Flarion base station controllers (BSC)
  • Flarion/Qualcomm wireless broadband infrastructure

Monitoring Examples

An operator can poll foamOpState and foamAdminState per foamSlotID to determine whether a specific line card or module in a Flarion base station is operationally up, down, or administratively disabled. foamBtsIdentifier and foamBscNameIdentifier tie a reported hardware unit to its base station and controlling BSC, while foamSerialNumber, foamPartNumber, and foamHardwareVersion supply asset details for field service. A foamOpState transition to a down/fault value on a card whose foamAssemblyId maps to an LED (foamLed) or MCU (foamMcu) sub-object would flag a specific hardware module needing replacement.

What Can Be Monitored

  • module operational state
  • module administrative state
  • hardware serial number/part number/version
  • base station and BSC identifiers

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using foamRedLed OID:

Select a Flarion (Qualcomm) Flash-OFDM BTS/BSC hardware inventory as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type foamRedLed into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the foam Red LED state. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'off', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
