Description: Dell Force10 MIB for Virtual Link Trunking (VLT), managing dual-homed multi-chassis link aggregation peer configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is F10-VIRTUAL-LINK-TRUNK-MIB?

This Dell Force10 MIB covers Virtual Link Trunking (VLT), a proprietary dual-brain multi-chassis link aggregation feature that lets two independent Force10 switches present a single logical Layer 2 domain to downstream devices while remaining independent L2/L3 switches to the upstream network. It exposes VLT domain configuration (domain ID, MAC address, priority) and rich operational/fault status, including peer status, inter-chassis link (ICL) status, and heartbeat status between the two VLT peer chassis. It is heavily oriented toward hardware/software fault monitoring of the VLT control plane: f10VLTPeerStatus and f10VLTHBeatStatus reveal whether the peer switch and its keepalive heartbeat are healthy, and f10VLTIclStatus reports the state of the critical inter-chassis link that synchronizes the two peers. As a proprietary multi-chassis feature it has no direct IETF MIB dependency but conceptually overlays standard link-aggregation behavior across two chassis. It is deployed in Dell Force10 data center and campus core designs where VLT is used to eliminate spanning-tree blocking and provide active-active redundancy between paired switches. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the F10-VIRTUAL-LINK-TRUNK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in F10-VIRTUAL-LINK-TRUNK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Dell Force10 switch pair configured for Virtual Link Trunking (data center/campus core)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll f10VirtualLinkTrunkTable/f10VirtualLinkTrunkTableEntry to read f10VLTPeerStatus and f10VLTHBeatStatus, and a peer status transitioning to down while heartbeat still shows up would indicate a split-brain risk on the VLT pair. f10VLTIclStatus tracks health of the inter-chassis link itself (f10VLTIclIfIndex identifies which interface carries it), so a failed ICL alongside healthy heartbeat over the backup path (f10VLTBkUpIpAddr) would trigger the VLT notifications defined in f10VirtualLinkTrunkNotifications. f10VLTRole and f10VLTDomainId identify which chassis is primary/secondary and which VLT domain is being reported.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VLT peer status
  • inter-chassis link (ICL) status
  • VLT heartbeat status
  • VLT role (primary/secondary)
  • backup heartbeat IP path
  • VLT domain configuration

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using f10VLTStatNumHelloSent OID:

Select a Dell Force10 switch pair (Virtual Link Trunking / VLT multi-chassis LAG) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type f10VLTStatNumHelloSent into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The count of Hello Packets sent across the ICL for synchronization. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
