Category: Technology: Network Monitoring

Description: Provides access to the system event log including event records, severity, and timestamps via SNMP.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is EVENTLOG-MIB?

EVENTLOG-MIB is a general-purpose, vendor-neutral SNMP module for exposing a system's internal event log rather than a specific manufacturer's product feature. It surfaces event log entries as structured records, including severity levels and timestamps, giving a remote manager a normalized view of logged occurrences without needing syslog access. Its primary value is monitoring software/system status: by tracking error, warning, and informational events over time it functions as a real-time fault and health feed, complementing counters like uptime with an actual record of what went wrong and when. It stands largely on its own but is typically used alongside standard system MIBs (e.g., SNMPv2-MIB for sysUpTime/sysDescr) to correlate log entries with device identity and reboot events. It's typically deployed on servers, network appliances, or embedded systems that need to surface internal log activity to a centralized SNMP-based network management system. Engineers can download the EVENTLOG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EVENTLOG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • network devices and servers maintaining an internal event log

Monitoring Examples

No concrete instance objects were supplied in the source data for this module (sample_objects is empty), so specific table or scalar names can't be confirmed here. Based on its description, an admin would typically poll an event-record table for severity, event type, and timestamp fields to detect a spike in error-level entries or a specific fault message logged by the device, using that as an early warning of a developing hardware or software problem.

What Can Be Monitored

  • event severity level
  • event timestamp
  • event record count
  • recent log entries
