Category: Technology: Network Monitoring
Description: Defines SNMP notification objects and event tables for generic system event reporting.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is EVENTS-MIB?
Despite its generic name, EVENTS-MIB (based on its av-prefixed objects) appears to be an antivirus/security-software event-reporting MIB, likely from an antivirus engine's SNMP agent rather than being a general vendor-neutral events module. It exposes notification-related objects covering antivirus database (bases) update status, module download and update failures, base retranslation and rollback errors, and license key installation status. It is centered on monitoring the software status of a security agent: whether virus definition bases updated successfully, whether specific protection modules failed to download or update (with failure reasons), and whether license keys installed correctly - all critical health indicators for endpoint/gateway antivirus deployments. No explicit dependency on other MIBs is evident, though it would typically be paired with a base system or hardware MIB for full host visibility. It's typically deployed on servers or gateways running an antivirus engine whose SNMP agent reports update and licensing failures to a central security management console. Engineers can download the EVENTS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EVENTS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- antivirus/security software agent (server or gateway)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would monitor avBasesDate to confirm virus definition bases are current, and check avBasesIntegrityFailReason or avBasesRollbackErrorReason to detect a corrupted or rolled-back update. avModuleDownloadFailureReason paired with avNotDownloadedModuleName would identify which specific protection module failed to download, while avUpdateFailureModuleName/avModuleUpdateFailureReason would flag a module that downloaded but failed to apply. avInstalledLicenseKeySerial and avLicenseInstalationFailedKeySerial would be checked to confirm license validity and catch licensing failures that could leave the endpoint unprotected.
What Can Be Monitored
- virus database (bases) update status
- module download/update failures
- base rollback/integrity errors
- license key installation status
