What Is ESM-snmp?
ESM-snmp is a vendor MIB module for managing Enterprise Storage Manager (ESM) storage management systems, focused on how the device sends SNMP trap notifications rather than on storage data itself. It exposes configuration objects for trap-receiver management, including tables of trap destination addresses, community strings, SNMP versions, and per-entry state/flag/age tracking, plus trap learning and aging behavior controls. In monitoring terms it is chiefly used to verify that fault and alert notifications (traps) are correctly configured and being delivered to the right management stations, which is itself a form of software/configuration health check for the storage management agent. It is a fairly self-contained proprietary MIB with no strong apparent dependency on IETF standard MIBs beyond generic SNMP trap semantics. It would typically be deployed on ESM storage arrays or storage management controllers where administrators need to confirm that SNMP-based fault reporting is active and correctly targeted. Engineers can download the ESM-snmp file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Supported Devices
- Fibronics International network equipment (SNMP trap destination config) — Enterprise OID 22 resolves to Fibronics International (a 1980s-era Israeli LAN/fiber-optic networking vendor), not a storage-management product as the 'ESM' filename previously suggested — consistent with EDB-snmp, another Fibronics module sharing this enterprise OID.
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll rTrapAddrTable/rTrapAddrEntry to enumerate configured trap destinations, checking rTrapAddrAddr, rTrapAddrComm, and rTrapAddrVer to confirm each receiver's IP, community string, and SNMP version are correct, and rTrapAddrState or rTrapAddrFlag to verify the entry is active. rTrapAddrAge combined with rTrapLearning/rTrapAging settings would reveal whether stale or auto-learned trap-receiver entries are aging out as expected. A mismatch here (e.g., an inactive or expired trap receiver) would explain why expected fault notifications from the ESM system are not reaching the NMS.
