What Is Dell-SMON-MIB?

Dell-SMON-MIB extends the standard RMON Switch Monitoring (SMON) capability with Dell-specific port-copy (SPAN/mirroring) features for VLAN-aware traffic mirroring and analysis on Dell switches. It exposes configuration objects controlling port-copy (mirror) sessions, VLAN tagging behavior for mirrored traffic, and copy-destination mode. Its monitoring value is confirming the software configuration state of traffic-mirroring sessions used for network analysis and troubleshooting, verifying whether port mirroring is supported, enabled, and correctly tagging VLAN information on copied frames. It explicitly builds on the standard SMON MIB (RFC 2613) framework, adding Dell-specific mirroring enhancements on top of it. It is deployed on Dell PowerConnect/Networking switches when operators attach packet analyzers or IDS/IPS sensors via port mirroring for traffic inspection. Engineers can download the Dell-SMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Dell-SMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • port mirroring (SPAN) support
  • port copy session enablement
  • VLAN tagging mode for mirrored traffic
  • copy destination mode

Supported Devices

  • Dell PowerConnect/Networking switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check rlPortCopySupport and rlPortCopySessionsEnabled to confirm the switch supports and currently has port-mirroring sessions active, and inspect rlPortCopyVlanTaggingTable/rlPortCopyVlanTaggingEntry to verify whether mirrored frames retain VLAN tags, which matters when the destination analyzer expects tagged versus untagged traffic. rlPortCopyMode indicates whether the destination port is in monitor-only or network mode, important for confirming the mirror port won't unexpectedly participate in normal switching.
