Description: Defines objects for managing the execution of management scripts on remote SNMP agents.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring DISMAN-SCRIPT-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is DISMAN-SCRIPT-MIB?

DISMAN-SCRIPT-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB from the Distributed Management (DISMAN) working group, defining a framework for delegating and executing management scripts on remote SNMP agents so a manager doesn't need constant connectivity to perform multi-step management tasks. It exposes a language-capability table describing which scripting languages/extensions an agent supports (with vendor, version, and revision), an extension table listing named language extensions, plus a broader set of tables (not shown in the sample objects) for script definitions, launch control, and run results. For monitoring purposes, it lets an operator confirm which script languages and extension modules a given agent supports before deploying a script, and — via the fuller script-run tables defined elsewhere in the module — track whether delegated scripts are running, completed, or failed, functioning as a job/task-status mechanism rather than hardware telemetry. It is a self-contained IETF standard module that does not depend on vendor MIBs, though implementations of it typically also rely on SNMPv3/USM for the security needed to authorize script execution. It is deployed on network devices and management platforms that support SNMP-delegated scripting, most commonly research/testbed environments and some carrier-grade network elements rather than typical enterprise switches/routers. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DISMAN-SCRIPT-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DISMAN-SCRIPT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to SNMP agents supporting DISMAN script delegation

Monitoring Examples

An operator would read smLangTable/smLangEntry (smLangLanguage, smLangVendor, smLangVersion, smLangRevision) to discover which scripting languages an agent supports before attempting to delegate a script to it. smExtsnTable/smExtsnEntry lets the manager enumerate named smExtsnExtension modules available on that agent. Beyond what's captured in the sample objects, the fuller MIB (under smObjects) also defines script launch and result tables used to check whether a delegated script succeeded or failed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • supported scripting languages and versions per agent
  • available language extensions
  • delegated script run/completion status (via related script tables)
