Category: SNMP Framework

Description: Defines objects for creating expressions over MIB values that can be evaluated dynamically, enabling computed virtual objects such as rates, deltas, and boolean conditions.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB?

DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB is an IETF Distributed Management (DISMAN) standards-track MIB (RFC 2982) that lets an SNMP agent define and evaluate arithmetic/logical expressions over other MIB objects, effectively creating computed "virtual" objects such as rates, deltas, sums, or boolean threshold conditions without requiring custom agent code. Rather than exposing hardware or a specific subsystem's raw data itself, it exposes a meta-layer: a table of named expression definitions (expExpressionTable) and resource-limit controls for how many wildcarded instances an expression may resolve to. Its monitoring value is indirect but powerful for software status monitoring — it is commonly used to build derived health indicators, like the rate of change of an error counter or a boolean "over threshold" flag, simplifying anomaly detection that would otherwise require polling raw counters and computing externally. It is a vendor-neutral IETF standard with no dependency on a specific vendor's data, though it operates on top of whatever other MIBs (interfaces, host resources, etc.) the defined expressions reference. It is typically deployed on any SNMP agent implementing the DISMAN framework, often alongside DISMAN Event or Schedule MIBs to trigger actions when expression results cross thresholds. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DISMAN-EXPRESSION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any SNMP agent implementing the IETF DISMAN framework

Monitoring Examples

An operator would define an entry in expExpressionTable/expExpressionEntry (named via expExpressionName, owned by expExpressionOwner) that computes a delta or rate from a target counter, with expExpressionValueType declaring the result type, then simply poll the resulting expExpression value instead of computing rates client-side. The expResourceDeltaWildcardInstanceMaximum and related objects under expResource let an operator monitor and tune how many wildcarded instances an expression is allowed to expand into, catching a misconfigured expression that would otherwise explode into an unmanageable number of instances.

What Can Be Monitored

  • defined expression values
  • expression resource/instance limits
  • wildcard instance counts
  • expression value type/comment metadata

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using expResourceDeltaWildcardInstanceResourceLacks OID:

Select an SNMP agent implementing IETF DISMAN framework (vendor-neutral, expression MIB) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type expResourceDeltaWildcardInstanceResourceLacks into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of times this system could not evaluate an expression because that would have created a value instance in excess of expResourceDeltaWildcardInstanceMaximum. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in instances), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
