Organization: MRV Communications, Inc.

Last Updated: 2006-02-22

Category: Device Management

Description: Manages device identification including hardware revision, serial number, and firmware version.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DEV-ID-MIB?

DEV-ID-MIB is a vendor-specific ('nbase'/Netbase-style enterprise) MIB dedicated to device identification for a network device, typically a switch. It exposes hardware identity attributes such as system name, base MAC address, hardware version, board and unit serial numbers, and, for multi-CPU platforms, a per-CPU table of serial numbers and descriptions. Its primary monitoring value is inventory and asset tracking rather than live performance data: it lets an administrator confirm exactly which hardware revision and serial-numbered unit is running, and enumerate installed CPUs via nbDevIdCpuTable, which is useful for warranty tracking, RMA processes, and detecting unexpected hardware swaps. It is a self-contained vendor identification MIB with no strong dependency on other standard MIBs beyond typical SNMPv2-SMI conventions. It is typically deployed on modular or stackable switches, where this DEV-ID-MIB reference helps confirm hardware identity per chassis or per CPU module for support and inventory purposes.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DEV-ID-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • network switch with Netbase-style management agent
  • modular/stackable switch chassis

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll nbDevIdHardwareVersion, nbDevIdHardwareSerialBoard, and nbDevIdHardwareSerialUnit to record the exact hardware revision and serial number of a deployed unit for asset management. On multi-CPU platforms, nbDevIdCpuTable / nbDevIdCpuEntry (indexed by nbDevIdCpuIndex) would be walked to retrieve nbDevIdCpuSerial and nbDevIdCpuDescr for each installed CPU module, useful for confirming a hardware upgrade or diagnosing a suspected counterfeit or mismatched replacement part. nbDevIdBaseMAC and nbDevIdSysName provide the identity anchor used to correlate this device's inventory record with other management systems.
