Description: Manages MAC address change notifications and table update events for Dell Networking switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is DELL-NETWORKING-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB?
DELL-NETWORKING-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB is a Dell Networking OS MIB that manages MAC address change notifications and forwarding-table update events on Dell Networking (Force10-derived) switches. It exposes configuration objects for enabling MAC learn/move notification and trap definitions that fire when the switch's MAC address table gains, loses, or moves an entry. Its primary monitoring value is for software/control-plane status: it lets an operator detect abnormal MAC learning activity such as flapping hosts, spoofing, or loop-induced MAC moves, rather than exposing hardware sensors like temperature or power. It is a vendor-specific companion to the standard BRIDGE-MIB/Q-BRIDGE-MIB forwarding database and is typically combined with those MIBs for full Layer 2 visibility. It is deployed on Dell Networking data-center and campus switches where MAC-move flood detection and forwarding-table change auditing are needed. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the DELL-NETWORKING-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DELL-NETWORKING-MAC-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Dell Networking (Force10-based) switches
Monitoring Examples
An administrator enables notifications via objects under dellNetMacNotificationObjects and then subscribes to traps in dellNetMacNotificationTraps to be alerted whenever a MAC address is learned, aged out, or moved between ports. A burst of MAC-move traps for the same address arriving from different interfaces in a short window is a classic sign of a Layer 2 loop or duplicate MAC/spoofing condition. Because this MIB only carries notification configuration and trap definitions rather than a full address table, the underlying station addresses are still read from the standard forwarding-database MIB.
What Can Be Monitored
- MAC notification enable state
- MAC learn events
- MAC move/flap events
- MAC address aging events
- trap destination configuration
