What Is DEC-BUS-MIB?

DEC-BUS-MIB is a Digital Equipment Corporation MIB for managing Broadcast and Unknown Server (BUS) components used in legacy DEC ATM LAN Emulation-style network equipment, tracking the configuration and status of bus components over ATM or LAN backplane connections. It exposes a configuration table (decBusConfigTable) with per-bus admin/operational status, last-change timestamp, ATM address, description, LAN name/type, and maximum data frame size, alongside row-status control for creating/deleting bus entries. It is used to monitor the operational status of these BUS components, checking decBusOperStatus against decBusAdminStatus to detect a bus service that has gone down unexpectedly, and watching decBusLastChange to identify recent state transitions that might explain a LAN emulation service disruption. It depends on standard ATM addressing conventions (decBusAtmAddress) and is typically used alongside DEC's other LAN Emulation/ATM MIBs for a complete view of the emulated LAN service. It was deployed on Digital Equipment Corporation networking equipment supporting ATM LAN Emulation (LANE) in 1990s enterprise backbone deployments, and administrators maintaining this legacy gear can still download the DEC-BUS-MIB file to load it into a modern MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator polling decBusConfigTable indexed by decBusIndex can compare decBusAdminStatus to decBusOperStatus to catch a Broadcast and Unknown Server component that is administratively enabled but operationally down, indicating an ATM LANE service fault. Checking decBusLastChange after an alert helps correlate the fault with a specific recent event, such as a configuration change or ATM signaling failure. The decBusAtmAddress and decBusLanType fields let an administrator verify the bus component is bound to the correct ATM address and emulated LAN type (Ethernet or Token Ring) for its network segment.
