Category: ATM, Vendor: DEC/Digital

Description: Manages LAN Emulation Server (LES) and broadcast/unknown server for DEC ATM networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DEC-LES-MIB?

DEC-LES-MIB is a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) MIB for managing the LAN Emulation Server (LES), including its Broadcast and Unknown Server (BUS) function, on ATM networks that provide legacy LAN emulation over an ATM backbone. It exposes configuration and status data for each LES component supported by the managed device, including administrative and operational state, ATM address, LAN type, and maximum data frame size. This MIB is used to monitor the operational status of the LAN emulation service, letting an operator confirm via decLesOperStatus that a LES instance is up and serving its emulated LAN, and detect a service outage via decLesLastChange or a mismatch between decLesAdminStatus and decLesOperStatus. It is built on the ATM Forum's LAN Emulation architecture and depends on underlying ATM signaling/addressing conventions (decLesAtmAddress) rather than a separate IETF MIB. It was typically deployed in legacy ATM-to-Ethernet/Token-Ring bridging environments on DEC networking equipment during the 1990s. Engineers can download the DEC-LES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DEC-LES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) ATM networking equipment running LAN Emulation Server (legacy, DEC absorbed into Compaq/HP)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll decLesConfigTable/decLesConfigEntry by decLesIndex to check decLesOperStatus against decLesAdminStatus for each configured LES instance, flagging a component that is administratively up but operationally down. Reviewing decLesAtmAddress, decLesLanName, and decLesLanType alongside decLesMaxDataFrameSize would confirm the LES is correctly configured for the emulated LAN it is meant to serve, and a recent decLesLastChange timestamp combined with a down operational status would indicate a recent service failure.

What Can Be Monitored

  • LES administrative status
  • LES operational status
  • last state change time
  • ATM address
  • LAN type and name
  • maximum data frame size
