Category: Optical Networking

Description: Manages ODU2 (Optical Data Unit level 2) path configuration and PM on Cyan optical equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CYAN-ODU2-MIB?

CYAN-ODU2-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Cyan Inc., a maker of packet-optical transport systems, defining objects for managing ODU2 (Optical Data Unit level 2) paths within OTN (Optical Transport Network) equipment. It exposes path-level configuration such as accepted payload type and adaptation type, along with hardware/software status fields including administrative state, operational state, operational state qualifier, and connection state for each ODU2 path on a given shelf/module. This is directly a hardware and service-status monitoring MIB: the operator can tell whether an optical path is in-service, out-of-service, or in a degraded/qualified operational condition, and can track auto-in-service soak timers used during provisioning. It is layered on top of standard OTN/ODU concepts (ITU-T G.709) as implemented in Cyan's private enterprise tree, alongside the vendor's shelf/module addressing scheme. It would be deployed in metro or long-haul optical transport networks using Cyan (later Ciena) packet-optical platforms. Engineers can download the CYAN-ODU2-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CYAN-ODU2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cyan (Ciena) packet-optical transport platforms
  • OTN/ODU2 optical transport equipment

Monitoring Examples

An operator would index cyanODU2Table/cyanODU2Entry by cyanODU2ShelfId, cyanODU2ModuleId, and cyanODU2ODU2Id to check cyanODU2OperState and cyanODU2ConnectionState for a specific ODU2 path; if cyanODU2OperState shows a degraded or down condition while cyanODU2AdminState is still 'up', this flags an unexpected optical or framing fault on that path. Watching cyanODU2AutoinserviceSoakTimeSec during a newly provisioned circuit confirms whether the path is still in its soak/qualification period before being declared fully in service.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ODU2 path admin state
  • ODU2 path operational state
  • connection state
  • accepted payload/adaptation type
  • auto-in-service soak timer
