What Is CTRON-SFPS-MCAST-MIB?

CTRON-SFPS-MCAST-MIB is a Cabletron SecureFast Packet Switching (SFPS) MIB managing IP/multicast group membership, replication trees, and multicast forwarding state within the SecureFast switching fabric. It exposes multicast connection objects describing each forwarding entry's source, destination, sending switch, ingress/egress ports, group, TTL, age, and status (sfpsMcastCnxSource, sfpsMcastCnxDestination, sfpsMcastCnxSenderSw, sfpsMcastCnxInPort, sfpsMcastCnxOutPorts, sfpsMcastCnxGroup, sfpsMcastCnxTTL, sfpsMcastCnxAge, sfpsMcastCnxStatus). Its monitoring value is in the operational health and scale of the multicast forwarding/replication tree - confirming that multicast connections remain active (status, age) and correctly fanned out to the right output ports - which is important for diagnosing multicast video/data distribution problems. It belongs to the Cabletron SFPS MIB family and interoperates with standard IP multicast concepts (group, TTL) while remaining Cabletron-proprietary in structure. It is deployed on Cabletron SecureFast switches carrying multicast traffic, such as multicast video distribution or replicated data feeds across a switched fabric. An admin would poll sfpsMcastCnxGroup and sfpsMcastCnxOutPorts for a given sfpsMcastCnxSource/sfpsMcastCnxDestination pair to confirm a multicast stream is being replicated to all expected output ports across the fabric. sfpsMcastCnxAge and sfpsMcastCnxStatus would be checked to detect a stale or torn-down multicast connection that should have refreshed but didn't, indicating a join/prune protocol issue. sfpsMcastCnxTTL and sfpsMcastCnxNextSw help trace how far a multicast flow propagates and which switch it forwards to next in a multi-switch topology.

Mode 2 - Do some vlan checking. This mode allows connections to be established between any sender/receivers on any vlan except for groups using the 224.0.0.x range of ip multicast addresses. These addresses are used for the most part by routers which should only be communicating to each other when they are in the same vlan. Mode 2 restricts routers to have the same port based vlan membership. Mode 3 - Check all. The sender and receivers have to be members of the same port based vlan. This setting takes effect immediately. No existing connections will be torn down.

The rest of the connections will be reestablished after the receivers respond to sender announcements which happen every MC_CONFIG_API_REFRESH_INTERVAL interval. The packet object does not allocate space for the packet, it just manages the packet delivery machine. Each increment of this oid allocates space for 128 packet management objects which are 82 bytes in size. Therefore each increment allocates about 10k of memory. Value will not take effect until blade is reset.
INT sfpsMcastConfigApiRefreshInterval	1.3.6.1.4.1.52.4.2.4.2.5.4.1.7	INTEGER	read-only	This is the interval at which sender announcements will be transmitted by the switch that the sender is locally attached. All sender refreshes will occur within 12 seconds. If this number is set to 60, 1/2 of the senders will be announced every 60 seconds. If this number is 30, 1/4 of the senders will be announced every 30 seconds. If the number of senders grows, the refresh interval may have to be adjusted shorter. The fine tuning is to determine which is better, fewer-bigger announcements, or more-smaller announcements. Value will not take effect until blade is reset.

Additionally, when topology events occur that cause a redirection of the connection tree, time must be allowed for the topology agents in the domain to be notified before a new path can be requested. This is the number of seconds that will elaspe before remapping will be attempted. This setting takes effect immediately.
