Description: Monitors Cabletron PPC-based platform bad packet counters for diagnosing ingress frame errors.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CTRON-PPC-BAD-PACKETS-MIB?
CTRON-PPC-BAD-PACKETS-MIB is a Cabletron Networks MIB for diagnosing packet-processing errors on PowerPC (PPC)-based switching/routing hardware platforms. It exposes aggregate bad-packet counters (ctPPCBadPktsTotalTx, ctPPCBadPktsTotalRx) plus per-queue transmit bad-packet and queue-depth tables (ctPPCBadPktsTxTable/Entry, ctPPCBadPktsTxQDepthTable/Entry) indexed by queue. Its monitoring focus is hardware-level packet-forwarding health - counting malformed/dropped packets and tracking transmit-queue fullness/depth per hardware queue - which helps identify a struggling forwarding ASIC, an oversubscribed egress queue, or ingress frame corruption. As an internal diagnostic MIB tied to the PPC forwarding architecture, it complements rather than depends on standard IETF interface MIBs, providing deeper hardware-level troubleshooting. It is deployed on Cabletron/Enterasys switches using PowerPC-based forwarding engines, primarily for vendor-level hardware diagnostics, where CTRON-PPC-BAD-PACKETS-MIB SNMP monitoring isolates a struggling forwarding ASIC or oversubscribed egress queue.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-PPC-BAD-PACKETS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cabletron/Enterasys switch (PowerPC-based forwarding engine)
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll ctPPCBadPktsTotalTx and ctPPCBadPktsTotalRx for a quick aggregate view, then drill into ctPPCBadPktsTxTable/Entry indexed by ctPPCBadPktsTxIndex to see ctPPCBadPktsTxQueues and ctPPCBadPktsTxFulls, revealing which specific hardware transmit queue is repeatedly filling up and dropping frames. ctPPCBadPktsTxQDepthTable/Entry indexed by ctPPCBadPktsTxQIndex would show current queue depth, useful for correlating congestion with the bad-packet counts. Sustained non-zero ctPPCBadPktsTxFulls values point to a hardware egress bottleneck rather than a wiring or upstream traffic problem.
What Can Be Monitored
- total bad packets transmitted/received
- per-queue bad packet counts
- transmit queue fulls
- transmit queue depth
