Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron IMIM (Intelligent Multi-media Interface Module) MAC address tables and forwarding entries.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-IMIM-ADDRESS-MIB?

CTRON-IMIM-ADDRESS-MIB is a Cabletron Systems enterprise MIB (also known as the Backplane Protocol MIB) that models the MAC and IP addresses of Intelligent Multi-media Interface Modules (IMIMs) installed within an MMAC chassis. Its imimAddressTable, indexed by imimAddressChassisSlot, exposes imimAddressMAC and imimAddressIP for each populated slot, letting a management station map physical slot positions to the modules' link-layer and network-layer addresses. A separate backplaneHeartbeat scalar reports whether the module is in active communication with the chassis management module (heartBeatPresent), has lost contact (heartBeatAbsent), or does not support the backplane protocol at all (notSupported). It depends on the proprietary Cabletron backplane protocol running between IMIMs and the MMAC management module, and is deployed exclusively on Cabletron MMAC chassis-based network equipment from the mid-1990s. Because the module is small and address-focused, most operators searching for the CTRON-IMIM-ADDRESS-MIB MIB use it mainly to confirm slot identity and heartbeat health rather than for traffic statistics.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-IMIM-ADDRESS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron MMAC chassis systems
  • Cabletron Intelligent Multi-media Interface Modules (IMIM)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls backplaneHeartbeat for a given slot to confirm the IMIM is still in communication with the chassis management module, then cross-references imimAddressChassisSlot against imimAddressMAC/imimAddressIP in imimAddressTable to identify which module occupies that slot; a returned value of heartBeatAbsent combined with an unreachable IP would indicate the module has lost backplane connectivity or failed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-slot MAC/IP address table entries
  • chassis slot-to-module mapping
  • backplane protocol heartbeat status
  • module communication/presence state
