Last Updated: 2005-01-23
Category: Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys
Description: Monitors Cabletron entity operational, usage, and administrative state for physical and logical components.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CTRON-ENTITY-STATE-MIB?
CTRON-ENTITY-STATE-MIB is a Cabletron Systems MIB module that extends the standard IETF Entity MIB with additional state information for physical and logical device components. It defines operational, usage, and administrative state attributes layered on top of entPhysicalTable/entLogicalTable entries, giving finer-grained status than the base Entity MIB alone provides. It is explicitly a hardware/software status monitoring MIB: it lets an operator track whether a card, module, port, or logical entity is in service, out of service, or in a degraded/testing state, which is essential for detecting failed or removed hardware components in a chassis. As stated in its module description, it is a direct extension of the Entity MIB and therefore has a hard dependency on ENTITY-MIB for entity indexing and inventory. It was designed for Cabletron/Enterasys modular chassis switches and routers where multiple field-replaceable units need per-component state tracking. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the CTRON-ENTITY-STATE-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-ENTITY-STATE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cabletron/Enterasys modular chassis switch or router
Monitoring Examples
An operator would cross-reference this MIB's state table entries against entPhysicalTable's entPhysicalIndex to check the operational state of each slot/module, catching a card that has transitioned to an out-of-service or testing state after a suspected hardware fault. Because sample objects were not available for this module, exact table names must be confirmed from the vendor's MIB source, but the module description confirms it augments Entity MIB states rather than replacing them. Monitoring these per-entity states over time helps build an availability history for individual line cards in a chassis, distinguishing a brief admin-initiated reset from a genuine hardware failure.
What Can Be Monitored
- entity operational state
- entity usage state
- entity administrative state
- physical component in-service status
