Category: ATM, VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron ELAN (Emulated LAN) configuration for LAN Emulation over ATM networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-ELAN-MIB?

CTRON-ELAN-MIB is a Cabletron Systems enterprise MIB for managing Emulated LAN (ELAN) configuration used in LAN Emulation (LANE) over ATM networks, a technology that let legacy Ethernet/Token Ring traffic run over ATM backbones. It exposes configuration data for ELAN instances (per-unit ELAN policy, directory services address, deletion policy) and operational role objects for LAN Emulation Client (LEC), LAN Emulation Server (LES), and related peer discovery tables. For device monitoring it is used to confirm that ELAN configuration rows are active (via row status) and that a unit's LEC/LES/SFDS peer relationships are correctly established, revealing configuration drift or a LEC that has failed to join its ELAN rather than CPU or temperature faults. It depends on the ATM Forum LAN Emulation specifications and interacts with underlying ATM interface MIBs for the physical/virtual circuit layer. This module was deployed on Cabletron ATM edge switches and routers during the era when ATM LANE bridged legacy LANs across campus ATM cores. Engineers can download the CTRON-ELAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-ELAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron ATM edge switch/router
  • LAN Emulation (LANE)-capable network device

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ctElanConfTable/ctElanConfEntry, indexed by ctElanConfIndex and ctElanConfUnitNumber, to check ctElanConfPolicy and ctElanConfRowStatus for a given ELAN instance, confirming the row is active and correctly deleted per ctElanConfDelPolicyWithElan when decommissioned. The ctElanSFDSPeerTable (with ctElanSFDSPeerIP and ctElanSFDSPeerRowStatus) would be checked to verify SFDS (Simple Fault-tolerant Distributed Server) peer relationships are valid, and ctElanConfDirectoryServicesIP would be polled to confirm the unit points to the correct LAN Emulation directory server. A missing or inactive row in ctElanSFDSPeerTable would indicate a broken peer relationship preventing proper LANE address resolution.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ELAN configuration row status
  • ELAN policy per unit
  • ELAN directory services IP address
  • SFDS peer IP and row status
  • LEC/LES/ELAN role state
